A tribute steering wheel to Momos racing heritage

After we’ve seen the Momo Heritage series with the Heritage Prototipo for example with vintage looking leather, as well as other models, Momo started another heritage line, the Momo Racing Heritage Project. And they started with a steering wheel that looks quite familiar – the Momo 1968 Racing Heritage Project steering wheel – what a long name – or simply – 1968.

The motorsport heritage

For most of us, this steering wheels looks quite familiar, flat, zero dish, three spoke, 350mm, thick grip. Yes, that’s right, it’s the same design as the famous Momo Jackie Stewart signature steering wheel that Momo introduced, most likely, in 1968. Still one of my absolute favourites. In fact, I have eight of these Jackie Stewart wheels that I am going to keep for a purpose not known to this day.

Back to the 1968 steering wheel, same dimensions, same same but different. The edges are smoother on the old one but that’s part of the newer production line of Momo since the 90s. And the 1968 does not bear the signature of famous racing legend Jackie Stewart. Instead, the old stacked Momo logo appears on the front where the signature of the Jackie Stewart steering wheel is, both silkscreen printed.

A number of differences on the back. While the original has the original stacked logo engraved only, the new one has the limited edition number (169 out of 999) on the back silkscreen printed, together with the current logo and production date stamped.

Limited numbers

Momo manufactured the 1968 Racing Heritage Project steering wheel in limited numbers, 999 to be precise. In some of the information from Momo about the wheel you can read a “annual limited edition” when they talk about the production numbers. That could mean they manufacture 999 wheels of that exact 1968 wheel per year, or 999 of a different Racing Heritage Project design each following year, since they’ve announced that the 1968 is the first of the Racing Heritage Project line.

If they are putting out a new Racing Heritage steering wheel every year, based on the signature series, is Momo going to do it in the same order as back then? Clay Regazzoni next and then Jacky Ickx? Is Momo going to bring them all back to the market over the next couple of years? A lot of questions, one answer – we’ll see!

On the website it says 333 of these wheels were available for North America, I’ve heard 58 for the United Kingdom, 14 for Germany, don’t have precise numbers. Other than the 333 for North America, Momo didn’t communicate any of these.

Only 999 steering wheels have been made

I got my two hands on two of these wheels, one stays in my collection, the other one I am offering for sale here. And yes, you’re right, I am usually not into these new things here, but I hoped to get lucky and get either serial number 312 or 911 out of that 999. Didn’t get lucky but anyway. It’s a great wheel and since I love the Jackie Stewart steering wheel so much, the much younger nephew will stay as well.

It comes in the original box of course, with the aluminum plate and the limited edition red and yellow horn button – which is a real cool piece of its own.
